A Note on Fee Arrangements for Criminal Matters
We provide you with an initial, free phone consultation. If we determine that we can assist you, we will offer you one or
both of the following fee options:
- Flat Rate Fees. For most criminal charges, we will agree to review the Crown disclosure, offer you advice and enter a
plea for one flat rate. After completing our review of the Crown disclosure, you will be provided with a second flat fee option
that will be determined by the complexity of the charges and whether you are entering a guilty plea and require counsel
to speak to the sentence, or pleading not guilty and having the matter set down for trial.
- Hourly Rate Fees. With all criminal charges, you also have the option of selecting to pay us based upon our hourly
rates. The amount that you are billed is purely a function of the lawyer's hourly rate multiplied
by the number of hours of work the lawyer has spent on your file. The normal practice followed by all law firms billing in this way
is that the client is expected to post a "retainer" at the beginning, an amount that the law firm holds in trust to pay any legal
bill that is issued. If the retainer "runs out", the client will be expected to provide additional retainers. If there is money
left over at the conclusion of the matter, the law firm refunds this back to the client.
